Don’t have any eggs but want waffles? No problem. Let me show you how to adjust your waffle recipe to be an eggless waffle recipe. I will share our family recipe at the end.

Testing an Eggless Recipe

In 2025, the price of eggs is the topic of much conversation. The prices have skyrocketed in the last couple months. Like many people we have been reducing the amount of eggs we have been using. The challenge with that is a regularly use eggs when I am making waffles.
I thought it would be important to find something to replace the eggs and still make a delicious waffle. This brings forth 2 questions.
- What ingredient do I use in place of eggs?
- Do you need to add or subtract the amounts of other ingredients?
After doing some configuring and taste testing I am happy to say that I can answer those questions now and share my results with you. You don’t need to worry about not having waffles anymore when you are trying to avoid using a lot of eggs.

What Can Replace the Egg?
I think the best ingredient to use in place of eggs is oil. Why does oil work, here are 3 roles that oil can play that eggs also play.
- Moisture – both eggs and oil add moisture to the waffle batter
- Binding – oil can be used to bind together the dry ingredients
- Fat – oil is a source of fat for the waffle batter just as eggs are
Other alternatives to eggs that I have seen people share are applesauce or mashed bananas. But while these will add moisture, they aren’t going to help with binding and they don’t provide fat.
As for the type of oil to use, I would go with a neutral tasting oil most of the time unless you want the oil to make a difference in flavor. You can try it with olive oil for a more fruity flavor to the waffles.

What Needs to Be Changed?
Another role that eggs play in waffle making is in leavening. Oil doesn’t, so you are losing some of that when you take out the eggs and use oil instead. What you need to do is bump up your baking powder. By a lot. Like 4 times as much! But it works as the waffles come out just as fluffy as they would have with the egg.
Thinner Batter
One thing I did notice was that the batter was thinner the batter I make with eggs. It’s important that you let the batter rest before using it right away. This give time for the flour to hydrate which will thicken the batter some. I would let it rest for about 10 minutes. That will make a difference so that the batter isn’t too thin whatsoever. A really thin batter is hard to work with as it’s easy to make a mess with it.
How to Make Our Other Waffle Recipes Eggless?
If you are looking to try some of the other waffle recipes on the blog and want to swap out the eggs, here is what I would do. I do have to say that I haven’t tested it on my recipes but I feel like it would work well in any recipe. Let me know if you try it and what your results were.
- Add 4x as much baking powder, so if the recipe calls for 1/2 tsp of baking powder, use 2 tsp of baking powder
- Use 1 tablespoon of oil in place of each egg the recipe calls for
🧇 How many waffles does it make? Using a Dash Mini Waffle maker I got 16 mini waffles out of this recipe. Using a large waffle maker I got 4 waffles out of this recipe. You can easily double or triple everything to make more waffles.

Eggless Waffles
Ingredients
- 2 cups flour
- 4 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 2 cups whole milk
- 4 tbsp melted butter
- 2 tbsp cooking oil
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl combine: the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix well.
- Melt the butter in the microwave and allow a few minutes to cool.
- Measure out the milk into a measuring cup with space to add the oil Mix well to combine. Once the butter has cooled a bit, add it as well.
- Make a well in the center of the dried ingredients and pour in the wet ingredients.
- Mix it all together until it is just combined and there is no dry flour. Don't worry about it being lumpy, the lumps will cook out. You don't want to overmix the batter or your waffles will be tough.
- Allow the batter to rest for 10 minutes. The batter will thicken some as the flour hydrates.
- Once the waffle maker is hot. Brush butter on both top and bottom of the waffle maker then add your batter. Cook until waffle can be easily removed without sticking and it appears completely set. Repeat this until you have cooked all the waffles.
More Messing with Ingredients
Here are some other waffle recipes where we mess around with the ingredient from trying different cocoa powders, leaving out the baking powder, or adding cottage cheese!
