If dipping waffles into a tasty sauce is your kind of breakfast, buckle up! I am going to show you how to make waffle sticks that you can dip in an easy to make peanut butter sauce.
My son is a big peanut butter fan. He loves coming up with different recipes to use peanut butter. So I knew when we launched this blog we for sure had to include plenty of nutty recipes. We are going to kick it off with a peanut butter dipping sauce for waffle sticks.

Waffle Stick Maker
There are two ways you could make waffle sticks. You could take a full size waffle and cut it into sticks. This works great if your waffle iron is a square, but most people probably have a round one so your sticks won’t be even.
The best option is a waffle stick maker. I got my wife a Dash Waffle Stick maker for Christmas a couple years back. We don’t always break them into sticks but this maker does a great job of making 4 perfect sized waffle sticks.

Unlike some of my other mini waffle makers, this one has a latch on it. It also makes large waffles. I would say it’s my biggest mini waffle maker!

Crispy Waffle Sticks
So if your waffle sticks are going to be for dipping, they need to be firm and crispy. Floppy waffles just will not do. I made some adjustments to my basic mini waffle recipe to make these.
What did I do?
- Added 1 tablespoon of sugar
- Whip the egg white
- Used a higher percentage of corn starch
The sugar will produce a crispier waffle. Separating the egg into yolk and white and then whipping the white separately adds air to the batter that helps make the waffles more crisp. Corn starch absorbs liquid better than wheat and it doesn’t create gluten, so that leads to a crisper waffle.

To whip the egg white, separate the yolk from the white without getting any of the yolk mixed in with the white. Put the white in a large mixing bowl; much larger than you think. You want to have plenty of space to whip the egg white.
Now, with a hand mixer, beat the white until it forms a stiff peak when you turn the mixer upside down.

Peanut Butter Sauce
My son originally wanted to just dip the waffle sticks directly into peanut butter. But the texture of the peanut butter is typically too thick. If you make your own peanut butter that is thinner, then you probably could.
To make the peanut butter into more of a dipping sauce and to add flavor, I took 1 cup of peanut butter and added to it:
- 8 tablespoons maple syrup
- 4 tablespoons whole milk
The sauce has a great balance of sweet, nutty, and creamy. Since you add milk, I would keep any leftovers in the fridge, if they even exist!

Freezing & Reheating Leftovers
These waffle sticks freeze really well. Just place them into a plastic zip top bag that you label with what they are, and when you froze them. You can easily pull them out for another time.
If you have a waffle maker like mine that makes sticks, you can keep them whole if you want and then put them in the toaster to warm up. If you already cut them you can place the sticks into the waffle maker again to reheat. Or you can place them in the air fryer. It should take about 1 minute or up to 2 to heat them back up.

Waffle Sticks with Peanut Butter Dipping Sauce
Equipment
- Dash Waffle Sticker Maker
Ingredients
For the waffles
- 2/3 cup all purpose flour
- 1/3 cup corn starch
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp kosher salt
- 2 tbsp pure cane sugar
- 1 cup buttermilk (or whole milk)
- 4 tbsp salted butter melted
- 1 large egg separated
For the peanut butter dipping sauce
- 1 cup peanut butter
- 8 tbsp maple syrup
- 4 tbsp whole milk
Instructions
Making the waffle sticks
- In a large mixing bowl combine: the flour, corn starch, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix well.
- Melt the butter in the microwave and allow a few minutes to cool.
- Take the egg and separate the yolk and the white. Mix the yolk in with the 1 cup of milk. Put the white into a mixing bowl.
- Whip the white with a hand mixer until a stiff peak has formed when you turn the mixer upside down.
- Add the melted butter into the milk/egg yolk mixture.
- Make a well in the center of the dried ingredients and pour in the wet ingredients.
- Mix it all together until it is just combined and there is no dry flour. Don't worry about it being lumpy, the lumps will cook out. You don't want to overmix the batter.
- Gently fold in the whipped egg white into the batter.
- Allow the batter to sit out while the waffle maker heats up. The batter will thicken some as the flour and corn starch hydrate.
- Once the waffle maker is hot. Brush butter on both top and bottom of the waffle maker then add your batter. I cook mine about 2-3 mintues past when the light actually goes out on the waffle maker indicating it's done. I want the waffle to be darker brown in color and crispy so it's perfect for dipping.
- Place the finished waffles on a cooling rack so that the bottoms don't get soggy. Keep making waffles until your batter is done.
- Cut or break apart into waffle sticks for serving.
How to make peanut butter dipping sauce
- Put the peanut butter into a microwave safe bowl. Heat up for 30-60 seconds to make it easier to stir.
- Add in milk and maple syrup. Stir well to combine. Serve with waffle sticks. If you have leftovers place those in the fridge. You may need to warm up the sauce again when ready to use.
