Did you know that waffles can be used as burger buns? No I am not kidding here, waffles can make for a perfectly tasty way to deliver that juicy burger to your mouth.
Our family loves baking our own burger buns. But living in a camper full time doesn’t make that easy. Especially when your oven that did not do a good job in the first place is not functioning at all – the sparks convinced us to never use it again.
Instead of resorting to buying buns in the store we tried out using waffles instead. The biggest question I had was could the waffles hold the burger in place while at the same time be delicious.
The answer is a resounding yes!

Why Mini Waffles Make Great Buns
While you could make these with a regular sized waffle maker, they are going to be way too big. Sure you cut them down to size, but they won’t be that perfect round shape. This where you want to have a mini waffle maker. They make a perfect sized bun for a 3-4 oz burger. You can always double up on patties if you want more meat.

What To Add To the Waffle Buns
I use my standard waffle recipe to make these buns. But that’s just the start. You can add some things to them to make them even better for burgers including:
- Cheese
- Garlic Powder
- Onion Powder
- Dried Herbs
The way I like to add the cheese is to shred a block and then place some of the cheese on top of the batter as I make the waffle. This will give the top of the waffle a nice crunch. You could mix a handful of cheese into the batter as well if you like.

I also love anytime I get the chance to bring out my plates with the burgers, shakes, and ice cream cones on it.

Mini Waffles for Burger Buns
Equipment
- Mini Waffle Maker
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup all purpose flour
- 1/4 cup corn starch
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp kosher salt
- 1 tbsp pure cane sugar
- 1 cup buttermilk (or whole milk)
- 4 tbsp salted butter melted
- 1 large egg
- extra butter for greasing the waffle maker
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl combine: the flour, corn starch, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix well.
- Melt the butter in the microwave and allow a few minutes to cool.
- Measure out 1 cup of milk into a measuring cup with space to add 1 cracked egg. Mix well to combine. Once the butter has cooled a bit, add it as well.
- Make a well in the center of the dried ingredients and pour in the wet ingredients.
- Mix it all together until it is just combined and there is no dry flour. Don't worry about it being lumpy, the lumps will cook out. You don't want to overmix the batter.
- Allow the batter to sit out while the waffle maker heats up. The batter will thicken some as the flour and corn starch hydrate.
- Once the waffle maker is hot. Brush butter on both top and bottom of the waffle maker then add your batter. If you using cheese add a small pile of it to the batter before closing the waffle maker.
- Cook until the light goes out. Repeat this until you have cooked all the waffles.
- Each 2 waffles as your burger buns. They should fit a 3 or 4 oz burger patty. You can make it a double patty if you want more meat.
