Birch Benders mixes are known for being good for pancakes, but do they make good waffles as well?

Typically I don’t like to buy pancake or waffle mixes. I prefer to do all the ingredients myself. There are some days it can be a challenge to quickly get breakfast going and start homeschool with our kids in the our camper.
I saw a great deal on Birch Benders at Grocery Outlet and I thought it would be a fun to test out how the mix does as waffles. Now the package shows a stack of pancakes, so that’s what they are mainly used for. However turn over the package and you will see waffle instructions as well.

The difference is that they want you to add oil to the mix. No trouble you can use whatever type of oil that you like. I wouldn’t necessarily go with your most expensive bottle of extra virgin olive oil. This brings up the next question:
Does Birch Benders Mixes Make Good Waffles
Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should. My question now is does this make a good waffle or are you better off making pancakes with them? I can saw that mix made for excellent waffles. They came out crispy enough with a good flavor. The batter itself was the right consistency for making waffles and I portioned the batter as I normally would when using a mini waffle maker. I use a Winco #20 Disher.
Here is what it looks like:

This disher fits 2 ounces of batter and has 2 1/8 inch diameter.
🧇 If you follow the directions on the back of the bag, a single recipe made 6 mini waffles in my Dash waffle makers. Easy to just double or triple to make more.

What Is In Birch Benders Classic Pancake Mix
Want to know what is actually in the classic Birch Bender mix?
- Organic Wheat Flour
- Organic Cane Sugar
- Leavening (Calcium Phosphate, Baking Soda)
- Salt
- Contains 2% or less of Organic Potato Starch, Organic Tapioca
Very straight forward ingredients. The main thing about Birch Benders is it uses organic ingredients and you just need to add water to it.

It makes a great option for when you are 🏕️ camping especially if you don’t have a camper like us and are just tent camping which at that point you are probably just doing pancakes and not waffles. Although if you have power at a campsite, a mini waffle maker is great to pack since it doesn’t take up much space. It’s a lot easier to use than the propane stoves people like to bring along camping and then end up either struggling to get them going or they run out of fuel.

Birch Benders Waffle Recipe
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup Birch Bender mix
- 2/3 cup water
- 1 tbsp oil
Instructions
- Combine the Birch Bender mix with water and oil. Mix to just combine. Don't worry if it's lumpy at all, that will work out when you make the waffles.
- Heat up your waffle maker while you let the batter sit so the flour can hydrate.
- Once the waffle maker is hot. Brush butter on both top and bottom of the waffle maker then add your batter. I like to use a #20 Disher to fill my Dash mini waffle maker.
- Cook the waffle until they are golden brown and are easy to remove with a spatula that won't scratch the waffle maker.
- You can keep waffles warm in an oven set to the lowest temperature. Don't stack the waffles. they will get soggy.
- Serve with powdered sugar, butter, and/or real maple syrup.
