All the members of my family are big fans of egg nog. My youngest would call it “egg snog”, which is how we lovingly refer to it nowadays. I decided I wanted to create a waffle that contained egg nog. It’s super easy to replace the whole milk or buttermilk that I call for in my waffle recipes with egg nog. You can do it as an easy one to one swap. Trust me it works perfectly.
You want to pick out an egg nog from the grocery store that you like and that tastes good to you. I like to add more nutmeg to the batter but besides that it’s the same way I always make waffles.
Waffle Sticks & Dips
I thought what would be fun with these egg nog waffles is to make them into sticks and have something that I can dip them into (more on that in a moment!). Kids love to dip things!
How do I make waffle sticks? We have a Dash waffle stick maker. It looks like this:

When the waffles are done cooking on it, you can tear them apart or use kitchen shears to cut them if you want them to look perfect.
Don’t Have a Waffle Stick Maker?
It’s totally ok if you don’t have a waffle stick maker, you can just make regular sized waffles and cut them up using a pair of kitchen shears. Super easy to do. It’s best to do with a square shaped waffle maker for more even looking sticks, but you could do it with a round waffle, you are just going aren’t going to have uniform sticks.

How to Make the Egg Nog Dipping Sauce
For this sauce, use egg nog you buy from the store. Pick one that you like. Egg nog is thickering than whole milk but still most of the time not thick enough to use as a dip, so you will need to thicken it. For that you will need:
- 1 TBS all-purpose flour
- 2 cups store bough eggnog
- 3 large egg yolks lightly beaten
- freshly grated nutmeg to taste
You will warm up the egg nog in a pot with the flour mixed in first. Then use egg yolks to further thicken it to give it a more smooth, custard or pudding like texture. I add nutmeg to taste depending on the flavor of the egg nog purchased. Speaking of nutmeg….

Use Whole Nutmeg
Did you know nutmeg looked like that? Nutmeg is one of the key flavors of egg nog. So it’s a key ingredients of the waffle sticks (and I like to adds some extra to the dip as well). To get the better tasting nutmeg, you need to skip buying the stuff in the container that is already ground up and buy whole nutmeg. You need to grate it yourself. It’s super easy, I just take a whole nutmeg and grate it overtop of whatever it is going into using a Microplane Zester. This is a great device for zesting lemons or other citrus for recipes as well like in my Blueberry Waffles with Lemon Zest.

Egg Nog Waffle Sticks with Egg Nog Dipping Sauce
Ingredients
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp freshly grated nutmeg
- 1 tsp salt
- 8 tbsp butter
- 4 tbsp sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 2 cups store bought egg nog
Egg Nog Dipping Sauce
- 1 TBS all-purpose flour
- 2 cups store bough eggnog
- 3 large egg yolks lightly beaten
- freshly grated nutmeg to taste
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl combine: the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg and salt. Mix well.
- Melt the butter in the microwave and allow a few minutes to cool.
- Combine the eggs and 2 cups of egg nog. Add in the melted butter.
- Make a well in the center of the dried ingredients and pour in the wet ingredients.
- Mix it all together until it is just combined and there is no dry flour. Don't worry about it being lumpy, the lumps will cook out. You don't want to overmix the batter.
- Allow the batter to sit out while the waffle maker heats up. The batter will thicken some as the flour hydrate.
- Once the waffle maker is hot. Brush butter on both top and bottom of the waffle maker then add your batter. I cook mine about 2-3 mintues past when the light actually goes out on the waffle maker indicating it's done. I want the waffle to be darker brown in color and crispy so it's perfect for dipping.
- Place the finished waffles on a cooling rack so that the bottoms don't get soggy. Keep making waffles until your batter is done.
- Cut or break apart into waffle sticks for serving.
To make the dipping sauce
- Note, if you are going to make the dipping sauce, I would do it before you make the waffle sticks.
- Add egg nog and flour into a pot. Add freshly grated nutmeg to taste. Mix really well to combine.
- Bring to just a simmer and then remove from the heat. Stay close by so it doesn't boil over.
- Allow the mixture to cool for a few minutes. Meanwhile mix up the egg yolks into a large bowl. Then slowly add the warm egg nog, so you don't scramble the eggs. Mix well to completely combine.
- Pour everything into the pot you used to warm the egg nog.. Heat the pot up over medium heat until it's thick enough to coat the back of a spoon or is about 170 degrees when checked with a thermometer.
- Allow to completely cool before using for dipping the waffle sticks.
