How to Use a Waffle Bowl Maker with Recipe

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

Let me show you how to make waffle bowls using a waffle bowl maker. The perfect vessel for ice cream or go savory and do a take on chicken and waffles! In this post I will be talking about the Presto Waffle Bowl Maker.

Imagine this situation. you are in a campground using their game room & kitchen on a 105 degree day. It’s so hot you don’t want to evacuate the room, so you decided to just bring down what you got in your fridge and freezer and make dinner down there.

Then you discover they have this waffle maker that guests can use.

You better believe you are testing it out for your blog and make some waffle bowls for your dinner. Ok, most of you (or all of you) probably can’t relate to this, but this is the reality of my life.

How to Use the Waffle Bowl Maker

When I was about to add my first bit of batter I was wondering how much should I add? Lucky for me there is a marker that indicated how full it should be. You can’t actually see it in the picture below because the batter is right up to it, but it’s clear where you need to stop. And it worked perfectly. No batter running out the side, no under filled waffle. Perfection!

How to Know When Done For Sure

If you are ever unsure when waffles are done, just take their temperature. We think about doing that for meat but it can be done for waffles or anything that you bake. It takes ways any doubt. The goal is to hit 190-200 degrees when measured with an instant read thermometer. As you can see in the above photo I tempted this waffle bowl at 195 degrees right when I pulled it out of the maker.

“Cones” for Ice Cream

Making your own homemade ice cream cones is not super easy, but making our own homemade waffle bowls for ice cream is. This is a great alternative. Although the waffle won’t be as crispy as a cone, it’s still a super fun way to deliver ice cream to your mouth.

Savory Waffle Bowls

A fun way I used these waffle bowls was to turn them into a different take on chicken and waffles by filling the bowl with some popcorn chicken and vegetables (corn, peas, and carrots). My waffle batter isn’t too sweet so it works in savory recipes too.

Servings 6 bowls

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup corn starch
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 2 tbsp pure cane sugar
  • 2 cups buttermilk (or whole milk)
  • 8 tbsp salted butterĀ melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • extra butter for greasing the waffle maker

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl combine: the flour, corn starch, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix well.
  • Melt the butter in the microwave and allow a few minutes to cool.
  • Measure out 2 cups of milk into a measuring cup with space to add 2 cracked egg. Mix well to combine. Once the butter has cooled a bit, add it as well.
  • Make a well in the center of the dried ingredients and pour in the wet ingredients.
  • Mix it all together until it is just combined and there is no dry flour. Don't worry about it being lumpy, the lumps will cook out. You don't want to overmix the batter.
  • Allow the batter to sit out while the waffle bowl maker heats up. The batter will thicken some as the flour and corn starch hydrate.
  • Once the waffle maker is hot. Brush butter on both top and bottom of the waffle maker then add your batter up to the max fill line. Cook until the light goes out. Repeat this until you have cooked all the waffles.
  • You can keep waffles warm in an oven set to the lowest temperature. Don't stack the waffles or they could get soggy.
  • Completely cool if you using for ice cream, or serve warm if you want to use them for a savory dish.
